US 40 m (80/30 m) Net.
Section under development.
To move to a net archive page, use the list boxes in the upper-right corner. Select year, net and click on the "Go" button.
NB: Pre-2012 net data are not processed. The Region 3 Net started on February 5, 2017 and ended in 2020.
The following graph and tables provide an overview of the variations in the level of activity for this net and give a general idea of the HF conditions met during the sessions.
-
QNI Graph.
In each month column of this bar graph, the number of participants, Net Control Station (NCS) and participating stations (QNI's), is shown:
- Per week: first week at bottom of column up to fourth/fifth week of the month;
- Per month: red on white background on top of column.
The bottom row in the table shows:
- Total number of sessions;
- Total number of participants;
- Average number of participants per session.
Click on a month name at the top of the graph to jump to the "QNI table" listing all participants per session.
-
QNI Table.
This table lists all net participants per month, week and session. NCS's are marked with "*". "Visitors" are not listed unless they took part in a session. Click on a day date in red to jump to the corresponding report table(s) if available.
-
Report Tables.
These tables compile reception reports received from net participants or listeners (SWL's). NCS's are marked with "*". Each row of a table recapitulates the reports given to the participants by the station listed in the "De" column. Call signs in italics on a different background color in "De" columns indicate reception reports. Reports expressed in decibels, +10dB for instance, must be understood as values over S9.

40 m: Friday, 0100 - 0135 UTC, 7043.5 kHz.
Notes:
- De AA7FV: shifting a little low to avoid another QSO. From Arizona, superb conditions and a great start to the New Year. Many thanks everyone, and I hope 2023 continues as well as this.
- De WA4FAT: Once again, a very Happy New Year to all my SSN brothers!
- De KT5LA: Happy New Year everyone! Conditions deteriorated as net progressed. These are earliest round reports.

40 m: Friday, 0100 - 0130 UTC, 7044 kHz.
Notes:
- De WA4FAT: Excellent conditions on 40 tonight and a thoroughly enjoyable Net, thanks to all!
- De KT5LA: Nice net this evening. 40 meters was better, I could hear all stations. On 80 tonight, only AA7FV made it to my antenna. But 80 is always noisy for me.
- De AA7FV: Superb conditions on 40m. It really did sound as if everyone was in the same room. If I listened carefully I could sometimes detect some QSB and QRN in the background, but I had to listen for it. Superb reception on everyone.
- De KA5TJS: Real good signals tonight on 40, solid copy on all. Great to hear Ken back again. The Titan key sounds great Jay! I love my Fat Boy!

Notes:
- De WA4FAT: As good as conditions were on 40, the opposite held court on 80. Very challenging to copy with dramatic static crashes from big storms finally pulling away from Alabama after a day with over 2 dozen tornados across the state and significant loss of life. I apologize to any who I was unable to discern.
- De AA7FV: 80m was a much noisier band, but still good copy into Arizona on everyone.
- De KA5TJS: QRN was real bad but solid copy on all. Darrel was a little stronger on peaks than Bill. Great job pal. Another outstanding NCS job.
- De W1SFR: 80m nil.

Thursday, January 19, 2023.
40 m: Friday, 0100 - 0150 UTC, 7044 kHz.
Notes:
- De KA5TJS: We only ran 40 meters tonight and worked out well. Net ran about 50 minutes and conditions were very good.
- De K6GVG: Sorry I had to drop out of the net, which had excellent propagation this evening. It started to rain here and guess my Hustler mobile antenna on the balcony railing got water inside and arced over, destroying most of the coiling. So, the SWR went crazy! Time to buy a new resonator.
- De WA4FAT: A great turnout for the first all-40 session of the SSN. I enjoyed the extended comments very much. KA5TJS did an excellent job as NCS and signals were excellent. Great to have Dave in Billings join us too.
- De N9EE: The band was pretty good to Florida. Could copy all and Allan you were very strong, 20 over S9.
- De K7TRT: It was great to have good coast to coast conditions on 40m for the net. Like at Eric's QTH, all of the signals were at least 559 here in Montana tonight.
- De NI4E: Nice to hear everyone this eve on 40m SSN. Band CONDX seemed good here so was hearing everyone S5 or better.
- De KT5LA: Please excuse my late arrival and early departure. Got distracted with a project at the beginning and called away by family at end. A bit noisy here, but I do like staying on 40 and having a longer net. Been giving this Titan key a workout between NAQP, CWT, SSN....and QSOs. It seems to like me.
- De AA7FV: Unavailable.

40 m: Friday, 0100 - 0200 UTC, 7044 kHz.
Notes:
- De W1SFR: Net did not QSY to 80M and stayed on 40M for the duration. So nice to be able to converse a bit instead of just giving RST reports. Great net guys.
- De WA4FAT: What a terrific Net and a wonderful idea to stick to one band while conditions are so exemplary. All were near S9 or above tonight making for the proverbial armchair copy. Looking forward to TJs recording, thanks for that! Great to have Gan join us tonight - hope you can do so often.
- De AA7FV: Superb conditions and the best ever net. Thanks Steve for managing us all for the full hour.
- De KT5LA: Excellent net tonight, great job, Steve. Local noise required me to use the Utah SDR, where everyone was clear and strong. Here at home, I could hear all stations, but copy was too light on a few. I do enjoy the relaxed feel of the hour long 40 meter net.
- De K7TRT: Conditions were pretty good here. When I first checked in, I must have bumped my tuner knob, because my SWR was high. I re-tuned and fixed it, so it worked out OK.
- De KA5TJS: Outstanding conditions tonight. Like the extra time on 40 for sure. Good job Steve and have a great week all!

40 m: Friday, 0100 - 0155 UTC, 7044 kHz.
Notes:
- De AA7FV: Thanks everyone for another great net. I enjoyed hearing about the varied interesting projects that folks are busy with. This single-band format is working out very well. The band couldn't have been better.
- De WA4FAT: Another single-band session of the SSN and a thoroughly enjoyable one. Darrel handled the NCS duties with his typical excellence and signals were absolutely superb. Despite the heavy rain here, my noise levels were exceptionally low. I think I could easily have copied any European check-ins had there been any.
- De KT5LA: Excellent net this evening, and I echo Bill's positive comment about the more relaxed 60 minute format. Excellent signals generally, no SDR used tonight. Some QSB throughout, but not too severe.
- De KA5TJS: Very good copy on all tonight. Yes the single band format it working great. With 9 ops it is to rushed I think for 2 bands. More info from/to all.

Notes:
- De WA4FAT: An enjoyable full-hour session on 40 meters with all signals quite Q5.
- De AA7FV: Ken, WA3RSR commented on there being a warble on signals, "as if the ionosphere between us has some jello within it." That's a good explanation for the flutter I was hearing on the signals from Steve, W1SFR.
- De KA5TJS: Outstanding net Bill, all signals were good here tonight. Great to hear Ken and Gan again on the net.

- De WA4FAT: Welcome to Alex, KN6BAZ - please join us again! Tremendous, roaring, ominous QRN tonight, with crashes up to S9. Luckily everyone had an excellent signal.

Notes:
- De WA4FAT: A terrific Net tonight despite thunderous QRN. In addition, right before Net, I experienced a bizarre situation where I could hear an echo of my transmitted signal, at about S5 or S6 strength, and delayed about a quarter of a second. Was I hearing my signal after it had traversed the Earth's circumference or some other anomalous propagation? In my 60+ years of operating, I can recall a similar experience only once, many years ago. Highly unusual and intriguing, to say the least. Any ideas?
- De AA7FV: Conditions were not quite so good on 40m tonight as they had been recently, but given the earlier time (DST) not too bad.
- De KT5LA: Good signals on the Utah SDR from KY8D; W1SFR (about 33 on the SDR); KD4ZFS and NI4E.
- De W1SFR: Sheesh! Terrible condx here and I had to bail out. Hopefully it will be better next time.

- De N9EE: Turned my power down to 30W and did not have my RS35M shutting down as I did last week with 100W. Yes QRN was much higher than normal on all bands. I think it is from the solar winds that are traveling at 600km/s causing all this noise. Stations were rather strong, but due to noise hard to copy.

Welcome to Blue, W1BLU, in Port Saint Lucie - great to have you. Please come again often. And sure nice to have NP3CW, N2ZUT, and KP4Q joining the ranks of 'regulars'. Same for Ric, K5RIX - great to have you again!
- De AA7FV: Quite a net! Ten check-ins tonight. As usual our pro NCS handled it all perfectly, in spite of the cat on the desk. High QRN on all stations tonight. Interestingly, my 17m horizontal dipole gave less QRN on most stations, so most of my listening was on that, still transmitting (95 watts) on the rhombic.
- De KA5TJS: Outstanding job with a rough band. QSB was bad and signal levels were down in East TX. Great to hear Dave in FL. Sorry he could not hang around. Hay to Ric again for the second check in. Yea, I think 10 is a record as far as I know! Great job Bill.

- De KA5TJS: Rough tonight but thanks to all who made it in! Thanks to Darrel and Bill for the relays. Noise was high for 30 meters for sure. CU all next week. AC5P Mike called after I signed off and sent his regards.
- De WA4FAT: Area thunderstorms made for a very noisy band here but good copy on all nevertheless.
- De AA7FV: Last night's SSN coincided with a geomagnetic storm, between a levels G1 and G2 (with Kp index 5 to 6). Things could have been worse, but they could also have been a lot better! Added to the high level of QRN from lightning storms around the country, we were probably lucky the net went as well as it did.
- De N2TNN: No other stations and I guess no one heard me.
- De N2ZUT: It was a bad night. I began listening for the CQ as I always do but there was nothing. About 5 minutes into the net, I heard: WA4FAT - 549 but faded. I kept listening to see if I could check in but after hearing Bill, there was nothing. The bands were not friendly all day.

Notes:
- De WA4FAT: What a fine Net this turned out to be! Hearing nothing at Net time I feared conditions wouldn't be in our favor. I took the Net a few minutes after start time and lo and behold we had a stellar turnout. Unfortunately, some of the check-ins couldn't hear all of the others, but lucky for me I must have been in just the right geographical spot as I had a fine copy on all. Nice to have Teri, KO4WFP back with us after an absence, same for Eric, NI4E, Jim, N2ZUT, and Dean, N2TNN. And a big cordial SSN welcome to Bill, AG5ZN, in Dallas. I hope he might join us again. Thanks also to Ric, K5RIX, who is nearly a regular now.
- De W1BLU: Conditions were strange in Florida as well but only because of the High Pressure front that was stalled out over the southern states, (that kept whipping storms over us in Florida like bands from a hurricane) the last week. Besides the lightning crashes, the QSB was causing Bill, WA4FAT in Alabama to go from 259 to 599, (I had to hit the attenuation button several times to protect my speaker). No biggie. It’s hurricane season and you get use to operating around this weather. N2ZUT, (Jim in NY), Faded in and then stayed steady at 339. No others were heard.
- De N2TNN: Good net yesterday and sorry I was late to the party. Noise level wasn’t too bad and most stations got good reports here in VA. Bill a great first and makes it easy to pick out with low signals.
- De AA7FV: Apologies, I arrived late this evening. I missed Blue, W1BLU. Sorry.
- De KA5TJS: Wow, thanks for picking it up Bill, I could not even copy you well enough to pull out your call. I did hear BLU, RIX and ZUT but they were about 239 349. Guess I just gave up! Fantastic job and glad the net went well. I will try a little harder next week.
- De KT5LA: Unfortunately, conditions didn't favor me here in CA. I did hear Bill, just barely, about 32 to 33 here. I was surprised to hear K6GVG was on the list, as I had not heard Roy at all.

- De AA7FV: Very poor conditions. High QRN, and QRM in the form of a warbling carrier almost on frequency (probably local) with a minor pileup going on just above our frequency. Signals were also weaker than usual.
- De WA4FAT: It was a rather tough go this evening with high noise and fluctuating conditions making it quite challenging indeed. Some could hear some but few could hear all. The west coast was unreadable for me with KT5LA way down in the noise and K6GVG absent. N2TNN in Virginia was strong for me but couldn't copy Darrel. KA5TJS was uncharacteristically down at the noise floor and apparently cut out early. K5RIX had his usual strong signal from Corpus Christi and may have had the best copy of all on the Net tonight. W1BLU was strong here but also apparently couldn't copy NCS and left early as well. And Dr Julio, NP3CW, was good copy for me to start but sank into the abyss when I tried to QSP for NCS. Thanks to Darrel, AA7FV, for yeoman's duty tonight - great job despite hostile conditions.

- De WA4FAT: It was a typically noisy and unsettled 30 Meter band tonight, but once again I was luckily in a sweet geographic spot and able to copy all. Super to have W1SFR back, and also Eric NI4E after an absence. Good to hear the west coast bunch and also Virgilio in Orlando. Sorry that Dean, Darrel, and Virgilio had to cut out early by so nice to have everyone.
- De AA7FV: Very high lightning QRN, making copy less than perfect even on strong stations. Apologies, I left the net early to join my local club monthly meeting.
- De KT5LA: Not the best condx fir me (are they ever), but i had good copy on Bill and Darrel and pretty good copy on Allen. K5RIX had a pretty good signal here. I think I heard K6GVG acknowledged but i could not hear him.
- De W1SFR: Geez, when I turned on my radio (a bit late to the party) I heard probably the worst QRN ever. I thought maybe something was wrong with the rig or my antenna. But after listening, I realized that we were just having a lot of residual storm noise from just about everywhere. The last two previous nets I had to disconnect my antenna due to very heavy storms here.

- De KT5LA: I actually had a fairly low noise level, just couldn’t hear stations! Thank you Darrel for the QSP. Some stations I could not here came up later in the net, most notably WA4FAT. The band seemed to get a bit better as the net went on.
- De WA4FAT: 30M was exceptionally noisy tonight and I suffered heavy QRM at the beginning of the Net along with pesky QSB as well. That said, we elite Swipers soldiered

- De CN8YR: Very glad to have been able to join the US net for the first time, following an insomnia (it was 01:00 AM here). Sorry, I've seen stations give me a report, but a deep QSB is preventing me from copying their calls. W1SFR was audible all the time, and even as good as websdr.

- De WA4FAT: A rather unusual Net tonight. As if conditions haven't been unpredictable enough, this evening included what sounded like some sort of OTH (Over the Horizon) RADAR. WA3RSR aptly described the sound as a prop airplane revving its engine. On top of that, NCS was enduring over 100 degree heat and didn't have good propagation to any station other than WA4FAT, so we had a lot of relays (happy to help!). - De AA7FV: Background noise here was unusually low on 40m this evening, which meant I could copy almost everyone perfectly. The one exception was Julio, whose signal dropped very suddenly at 0027 UTC from 459 down to 129. Julio is also the most distant from me (~4700 km). There must have been some event in the ionosphere between AZ and PR that caused the sudden drop.
- De WA4FAT: The noise level on 30 last night was exceedingly low, a pleasant change from weeks past. Excellent signals from everyone all the way around. No need for an SDR assist.
- De NP3CW: Darrel, the drop in my signal was due to elevated SWR.

- De WA4FAT: 30 Meters is hanging in like a hair on a biscuit, so it will be interesting to see what difference we observe next week after the time change and an hour later at 0100Z. We can always QSY to 40 if 30 is unsuitable.

There were varying levels throughout the net, though. So the east coast didn't quite make it to Southern CA tonight. Good thing that rhombic is in AZ to hold it all together!

Just after net, saw some lightning in our area as storms passed through the last couple days. I ended up disconnecting antennas "just in case". Have a great Holiday folks...see you for the New Years Eve party next Thursday!

- De KT5LA: I'm sorry I was unable to answer for the second round tonight. 40m was noisy at my home so I listened at first to a webSDR in PA. Signals were "OK", but after hearing Roy mention I was a bit weak at his location and the band seemed long, I switched to the northern Utah SDR. I guess he was right! W1SFR, KP4Q/W4 and KA5TJS popped right up. So I could hear the west coast fine. but W1SFR, N2TNN, KP4Q/w4.....all good signals on the SDR, but nil at home. Then just as the second round, the SDR began to drop out on me, making copy impossible. I did not respond. So let that be the last time this year technology fails me (HA!). Happy New Year, radio friends, see you January 4th!
